Boxing & Combat Sports
The sport of boxing is not nearly as brutal as most people think and requires great skill, precision and commitment - all aspects that are greatly assisted with a good mental skills training program. Our sports and performance psychologists have worked with boxers who compete at Olympic level all the way to those who use it as a way of keeping fit.
Boxing and other combat sports are psychologically demanding for many of the same reasons most sports are psychologically testing. First, you're alone in the ring and there is nowhere to hide. Second, boxing causes pain and half of pain is imagined and not real. Finally, the training requirements are intense so if you're not an exceptional manager of your own time then you'll not make it very far. Some of the mental areas most boxers would benefit from working on are:
- Improving time management
- Controlling nerves and anxiety
- Bouncing back from a poor round, fight or competition
- Learning when it's important to concentrate and focus and when it's essential to switch off
- Designing effective physical, technical and mental practice - not going through the motions
- Balancing training with life to prevent burnout
- Staying motivated by picking the right goals (yes, there are many)
- Learning how to think more accurately and less emotionally
- Deciding if you really have what it takes to make a make it to the top
