How Important Are Mental Skills? In summary, the psychological or mental side of performance is about as important as the physical (strength, flexibility and cardio) and technical (technique, skill set) sides - that is to say roughly a third of the "performance pie". However mental skills training is often the one that is neglected which means those that take it seriously have the most to gain in terms of improving performance. Finally the reason why these psychological techniques work as well as they do is because they're all based on good scientific research, rather than guesswork!
Warning! Be very careful when accepting the advice from anyone about the psychological side of sport and performance. There are many "cowboys" out there who although are very well intended, don't know what they're talking about. As registered sport psychologists we are specialists in facilitating improvement in the mental toughness of elite performers. As psychologists we're highly trained and experienced (6 years at university including 1000 hours of practicals) and as members of the Australian Psychological Society (MAPS) we're also highly regulated.
